Listeria infection, or listeriosis, is a foodborne illness caused by the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes. It’s a serious issue in food safety, responsible for around 260 deaths each year in the United States, making it the third leading cause of death from foodborne illnesses. The CDC estimates there are approximately 1,600 cases of listeriosis annually in the U.S. While it can cause mild symptoms in healthy individuals, it’s particularly dangerous for high-risk groups, including pregnant women, newborns, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. But I must warn you, if your body has been addicted to carbs and all those sugary sweets, it will surely look for it. Honestly, there was no easy way to get past this stage other than toughening it out. The first week is absolutely the hardest yet it's also the most rewarding once you've gotten past it.
Listeria is especially concerning because it can spread beyond the digestive tract to the bloodstream and nervous system, potentially leading to severe infections like sepsis or meningitis. In pregnant women, it can result in miscarriage, stillbirth, or severe infection in newborns. This bacteria thrives in cold storage environments, which is why it’s often found in refrigerated, ready-to-eat foods like deli meats, soft cheeses, and certain processed foods.
