The Lawsuit
As if eating supermarket meat wasn't bad already, it just got even worse. Walmart has reached a preliminary agreement to compensate customers who purchased packaged meat, poultry, pork, seafood, and bagged citrus products from its stores between October 19, 2018, and January 19, 2024. This settlement stems from allegations that Walmart artificially inflated prices for weighted goods at checkout. Essentially, people have been OVERPAYING for already low quality meat.
While Walmart has denied any wrongdoing, the retail giant has opted to settle the lawsuit to avoid protracted litigation. As part of the settlement terms, customers who can provide proof of purchase or attest to buying the aforementioned items during the specified period are eligible to receive compensation.
You May Be Eligible For Compensation
If you have been buying your meat from the store (instead of getting farm fresh meat delivered) you may be entitled to claim some money back. Eligible claimants stand to receive a refund equivalent to 2% of the total cost of their purchased goods, with a maximum cap set at $500. However, it's worth noting that the final cap may be subject to change pending the review and processing of all claims.
The settlement agreement underscores Walmart's acknowledgment of the claims made against it and signals a resolution attempt in the ongoing legal dispute. Customers affected by the alleged pricing discrepancies now have the opportunity to seek redress through this settlement mechanism.
